#70: What can coaches do to stay relevant and get clients?

Knowledge before experience or Experience accumulates knowledge. Which one do you believe comes first?

I personally believe a day without learning something will always be a day wasted. Knowledge is power, and through our experiences, we gain new knowledge. This is why I am eager to learn to stay relevant to the client I serve. This learning comes from a variety of sources, one that ranges from attending the annual conference of the International Coach Federation during coach week, and from the ups and downs of running a business from day to day.

This week, my podcast guest, Terry Yoffe, has over 19 years of experience in the coaching industry and has served on the board of ICF New York Chapter, Terry brings a wide range of personal and professional experiences in business and executive coaching.

Terry believes that the relationship she builds with her clients, allows them to become courageous and after working with her, they’re able to cut through the stories they tell themselves. They can then ultimately step outside of their comfort zones to meet all challenges. And Terry has an uncompromising and disciplined approach to coaching. She has the drive and a caring concern for her client’s needs to achieve the successes they desire. This allows her clients to gain greater self-awareness, personal fulfillment, and professional success.

When I asked Terry about her view on what the coaching industry was when she first started out vs what it is now, Terry shared that the coaching industry is very different now compared to when she first started in her earlier years.

“Back then, people didn’t know about coaching. It was a lot harder to get the word out without having to explain first what is coaching. Most people hear you are a coach, they think you are a sports coach,” said Terry. Nowadays, it’s a lot easier for coaches because there are not much of explanations you’ll have to do. It’s a lot easier than back in my days.

In this episode, Terry also shared ways for coaches to stay relevant and get clients. One most beneficial method of staying relevant and getting clients, according to Terry, is by participating in professional organizations like the International Coach Federations. They have a large network and it’s easier if you stay consistent so you are discoverable.

“ICF New York Chaptered reached out to me and invited me to be on their board,” explained Terry.

One thing Terry mentioned that I found particularly helpful is “be patient.”

You are not going to see the results right away, it’s a slow and long enduring process, but it will happen.
