5 Beliefs that are blocking you in your coaching business

I used to HATE the word "ALWAYS".

Having been in the healthcare world for the last 20 years, I have ALWAYS been told this phrase "THIS IS HOW WE'VE ALWAYS DONE THINGS." I know I'm not the only one feeling this way and this idea of having to do things one way or highway is deeply rooted in many areas of our lives.

Now that I'm in the coaching world, every now and then I still come across the word "Always".

  • You should always have a website

  • You should always do more live

  • You should always charge your worth

I mean, are you kidding me? I know my worth and money is not the only way I measure my worth. HELLO?

The problem in the coaching industry is there’s a lot of what you “SHOULD” do in order to make something work. This generates a lot of trends and if you are new to being your own boss, it creates a lot of speculation around “What am I missing?”, “Should I be doing that as well?” and “Why is no one signing up to my offer when I got so many people interested in the free offer?”

Instead of focusing on coaching, you find yourself ALWAYS running around trying to figure out how to get more clients. And what if my referral system suddenly slows down in this process?

A system is meant to make our lives easier and not drain us.

There are a number of systems that you need to set up at the heart of your coaching business that will help you minimize the negative self-talk that surface when things are slowing down during the year. (Yes! You heard me…the slow seasons in your coaching business are real)

A system simplifies the activities and processes that will help you achieve the outcome you desire in your business. It is an organized, repeatable way of getting things done. When you have a system set in place, it’s much easier and less likely to experience the self-doubt that arises, but rather keeps you focused on scaling and growing your business.

Many coaches focus on emphasizing the mindset rather than establishing the system you need for a scalable, profitable, and sustainable business. And there are a number of limiting beliefs, especially when it comes to marketing the coaching business that will help you grow and attract your soulmate clients.

Here are the 5 beliefs that are blocking you in your coaching business:

"I should know that something will be successful before trying it."

Umm…No! The only way you will know if it's successful is by doing it. Yes, I know it's hard to put time and effort into something without having evidence that things would be successful, but when you look back to the darker days of your life, did you know you were going to be a coach? Did you know all the tools and skills you know now?

What did you do in the past? You gave it a shot and gave it a try without seeing any evidence this would work! Am I right?

"I need to feel totally confident before moving forward."

Ummm…No again! Confidence is an inner muscle. The more that you stretch it, the better it gets. It's ok to be a beginner. The more that you take action at something, repeatedly, your confidence started to follow. If you sit and wait until you feel confident, you'll never actually go anywhere.

"I have so much privilege, so I should just offer my services for free."

Believe it or not, Money is a commitment. Remember that last movie you watched in a movie theater? You purchased the ticket, rain or shine, you are going to get yourself to the theater and watch it. Because you made a commitment and paid for your ticket.

When you offer the opportunity to someone to pay, they are making a commitment and declaring that they are ready to make a change in their life.

There are other ways you can give back to this world for free in different ways. Take this email for example. I'm sharing knowledge with those of you out there who aren't ready to buy or who can't really afford to work with a coach due to realistic circumstances. Money is a servant performing its duties to hold someone accountable as they move forward to make changes in life.

"I don't need to do marketing to have a coaching business."

You knew this one was coming, didn't you?

If you are a coach and you have a coaching business, then it's likely that your goal is to get a stranger or somebody into a CONVERSATION. I can not tell you how many times I caught myself thinking "If I can just have that conversation, I'm confident they will become my coaching client."

But…the problem is getting to that conversation.

Imagine this CONVERSATION you want is like going on the journey to see the Wizard of Oz. Your marketing strategy should focus on getting people to be on this yellow brick road with you in getting to the Wizard of Oz.

Check out my Brand Story Coaching where I take my students and pave the yellow brick road they walk on.

"I don't like to promote myself"

This is the most common line I hear from clients I work with.

And you know what? I get it. If you were all for yourself, chances are you wouldn't have chosen to be a coach and serve others in the first place. There are other ways to make money in this world and coaching is not the reason why you are here.

So yeah, I get the fact you wouldn't want to be at the CENTER OF THE SPOTLIGHT. That's just too Egotistic for you.

What I also know if you and I have a bigger purpose in this world. Yup! The fact that we are breathing and living with this burning desire to create a movement in this world - it's a big mission.

If we can reframe the word "Promo" to something else that you can use, what would it be?

  • How 'bout "Inspire"?

  • How 'bout "Encourage"?

  • How 'bout "Cause"?

You see, we are stuck in a world where if anyone speaks about something out loud, we think of it as "PROMOTE" but in reality, it's really about inspiring someone to make a change. That's what coaching is, isn't it?

If it is not a "Promotion", would you be willing to share what you believe?

I bet you do.

There you have it.

Here are the 5 beliefs that are blocking you in your coaching business.

  • "I should know that something will be successful before trying it."

  • "I should know that something will be successful before trying it."

  • "I have so much privilege, so I should just offer my services for free."

  • "I don't need to do marketing to have a coaching business."

  • "I don't like to promote myself"

Not ALWAYS but most of the time.

How many do you have at the moment?

Please share yours with me in the comment below so I can add on to this list for future students!
